Shetland ewes are the best mothers of any species I’ve ever known. Even the most timid become fiercesome defenders of their newborns. I learned this the hard way when I entered a pen to retrieve a placenta and was “attacked” by my daughter’s pet ewe.

A good Shetland ewe produces abundant milk and will raise lambs that are surprisingly large by two months of age given very little in the way of grain or other highpower supplements. Shetlands can be productive for a decade or more given no other health complications and typically twin from 2-3 years of age.
